DeMarco. “The business opportunities differ, but the entrepreneurial spirit of the two winners is a shared belief in the economic power and potential railroads of all sizes can offer.” Both Blacklands Railroad, the Short Line Railroad of the Year, and the Reading & Northern Railroad, the Regional Railroad of the Year, is featured in Railway Age’s April 2011 issue.

RailwayAge Click to view Blacklands Railroad is a short-line railroad headquartered in Sulphur Springs, Texas. We provide freight rail service across 73 miles of the former St. Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt) railroad between Greenville, Texas and Mt. Pleasant, Texas.  The majority of this trackage is owned by NETEX, the Northeast Texas Rural Rail District, and the rest is leased from the Union Pacific Railroad. Blacklands Railroad recently added 14 additional miles of trackage with the opening of the Henderson-Overton Branch Railroad, operating this portion for the Rusk County (Tex.) Rural Rail District, in Southeast Texas near Longview.

Blacklands Railroad prides itself on being able to move your freight in the most fuel and cost efficient way. As fuel prices rise, Blacklands Railroad can offer your business a type of freight transportation that is approximately three to four times more fuel efficient than trucking (Association of American Railroads).

Blacklands Railroad is also focused on getting your freight to the proper location as safely as possible. Year after year we have received the Jake Award for safety from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association. The award was named after Lowell “Jake” Jacobson of the Copper Basin Railway, who created the short line safety awards and has been a long-time advocate of short line and rail safety. The Blacklands Railroad is located in the northeast corner of Texas. We got our name from the “black gumbo” soil that is found from near the Red River, Oklahoma/Texas border to Austin, Texas.  . In June of 2005, the Blacklands Railroad leased an additional 7 miles of track from the Union Pacific Railroad, extending our reach from the Franklin/Titus county line to Mount Pleasant, Texas, where it interchanges with The Union Pacific Railroad. With so many options for businesses regarding transportation paths and the services we provide, Blacklands Railroad is the perfect provider for all your company’s intermodal, logistics, and distribution needs. Blacklands Railroad works closely with economic development corporations in many local communities to attract new businesses that will help maintain a rail service to local populations.
